What is IB Diploma Programme (IBDP)?

Programme model
The Diploma Programme (DP) provides a challenging, internationally focused, broad and balanced educational experience for students aged 16 to 19. Students are required to study six subjects and a curriculum core concurrently over two years. The programme is designed to equip students with the basic academic skills needed for university study, further education and their chosen profession. Additionally the programme supports the development of the values and life skills needed to live a fulfilled and purposeful life. In short, the programme’s ultimate goal is the centre of the model which is the IB Learner Profile.

The IB learner profile
The IB learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. The learner profile provides a long-term vision of education. It is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of schools and teachers, uniting them in a common purpose.

Watch the video below to see the IB learner profile come alive:

Through the DP, schools are able to develop students who:

  1. have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge
  2. flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically
  3. study at least two languages
  4. excel in traditional academic subjects
  5. explore the nature of knowledge through the programme’s unique theory of knowledge course.

Key Facts
International research shows that there are many benefits to choosing the DP over other 16-19 curricula. For example:

  1. DP students are better able than their peers to cope with demanding workloads, manage their time and meet the expectations placed on them, (Conley et al., 2014)
  2. According to IBO, a nalysis of DP students in Canada, the UK and the USA found that the DP’s extended essay improves students’ approach to learning in higher education
  3. According to IBO, 72% of students taking the DP in China attend one of the world’s top 500 universities, according to a 2013 study.
